This is the maternity maxi dress I made for my sister for her baby shower. Clearly it has been cinched and clamped at the back in the photo above as I don't have a maternity mannequin, but you can see how it looked on her in the photo below.
We went to the fabric store several months ago to pick out some thick jersey. She choose this pretty blue colour--and ironically she's having a boy--and I took it home. I didn't start the dress until the Monday before the Saturday shower. Halfway through the evening, I texted her in a bit of a panic as I realized making a maxi with no pattern--just a maxi she already has as a guide--and none of her measurements wasn't really going to work. She came over half an hour later and proceeded to put it on and take it off several times as I made adjustments here and there. Good thing she did because the top part (I sewed the top and skirt seperate and then attached them) was looking a little Star Trek-ish until I ruched up the shoulers.
After she left, I sewed the skirt, attached it to the top and did the hem. The dress turned out beautifully despite being a little longer in the torso than expected (my sister ended up belting the dress to solve that problem, which really worked out) and I was so proud. I dropped the dress off the morning of the shower and saw her a couple laters in it when she arrived. It is my best piece to date as despite creating a maxi dress for myself a few months ago, this was different as it was (a) a maternity style, and (b) had 'straps'. I'm hoping she will still be able to wear it after the baby is born.
Me & my sis playing the, 'Guess how big the baby belly is with a ribbon-game'.
I took pictures of my sister at the shower, outside, by herself but sadly--and I'm pretty upset over this--the pictures were somehow erased off my SD card. I'm trying to recover them but think it may be a lost cause. If I'm able to recover them I will definitely add them to this post at a later date and let you know.

Friday outfit for work, dinner & running errands (good thing I wore flats!).
Outfit deets: W118 by Walter Baker top & Skirt, Ardene flats, Sirens necklace & Joe Fresh and F21 bangles.
On Friday night, I met my family for dinner at Score's. If you're not familiar with the chain, it's a soup-salad bar restaurant with main courses to order. This was my helping from the salad bar: cucumbers, cottage cheese, beats & mushrooms.
Saturday was the day my Mom & I threw my little sister a baby shower. I wore my new dress from Forever 21 & a necklace from The Bay.
We worked so hard to put together a beautiful (pinterest-inspired) table-scape for the party. The invitation (seen above in the frame) was in chocolate brown and green so we colour coordinated in those shades. We used green/white polka dot napkins, ribbons & balloons along with plain green cups and plates. We tied ribbon the sweets cups (which were filled with green jube-jubes & chocolate covered almonds) and used a green table cloth which worked perfectly with my Mom's chocolate brown curtains in behind the table. The diaper cake was my Mom's creation and in the same colours and turned out great. We topped the cupcakes with little green/white polka dot butterfly scrapbook shapes that we stuck onto toothpicks. And of course the watermelon carriage filled with fruit and a nectarine with a face drawn on it to resemble a baby.
My sister is due on July 24th but (did you know) is already full term. It could be any day that I get to meet my (first!) nephew.
Saturday night I went to a cottage (party) which was totally impromptu and last minute. I honestly just wanted to have a quiet evening, but my boyfriend convinced me this was going to be a ton of fun...and it was. Can you believe this is the only picture I captured of the evening? Haha, it was that much fun.
The next day we left just before noon to head back to the city.
Outfit deets (hardly worthy): Maison Scotch tee, Joshua Perets pants & American Eagle for Payless flip flops.
My man convinced me to hit the gym on Sunday evening (after a incredibly needed nap, which was unfortunate because I slept away a beautiful day #wahwah) which ended up being a really great workout.
We were starving after so grabbed protein shakes at the gym and take-out on the way home. I had a chicken ceasar salad with half dressing and omitted the croutons.
HAPPY MONDAY!
Friday night I went to Rib Fest for the first time ever which was fun, but crowed and over-priced. I'm not sure if I'd go again, but the social aspect of it was fun.
Outfit deets: H&M dress (worn as a top), Walmart skinnies, Bamboo gladiator sandals & Ardène cross-body/clutch (new!). See a front shot of the outfit HERE.
On of the rib trucks--the line ups were outrageous!
Some of the trucks had over 100 people waiting. Nutso.
Later on, we hit up a patio for drinks and snacks. Then ventured through downtown, caught a busker circus act on the side-walk and indulged in some BeaverTails (a Canadian must-have). Afterwards, we went to the casino and put it all on black--okay, not true but a bet was made on black and won.
Saturday morning breakfast at The Arrow & Loon.
Afterwards my bestie and her husband raced against each other in what we've dubbed 'The 100m Finals'. They had an ongoing debate of who would win, head to head, in a 100m dash. My money was on Sarah, but her husband ended up winning. It was hilarious. See the video proof HERE.
Saturday casual outfit for breakfast and some shopping after (I didn't buy anything exciting; hairspray + eye liner).
I finally DIY'ed a pair of jeans I bought a couple months back from the thrift store. Will show before & after photos this week. If you want to know how to do this, check out my old DIY Distressed Denim Cut-Offs post.
Can't get enough of my new kicks.
Saturday night party outfit (+ hair).
Sunday morning running errands.
Outfit deets: Dynamite lace top & tube top (old) underneath, DIY'ed shorts from above, Sam Edelman 'Sophie Low' wedges, Gucci shades & Cleo belt.
Celebrating my sister's impending bundle of joy (a boy!) at her first baby shower. She's due in a month.
Sunday night dinner--coconut chicken strips.
So easy: butterfly chicken breasts, pound out to flatten, dunk in whisked eggs and coat in unsweetened coconut. Bake in the oven at 350C for about 20 minutes. Devour.
And lastly, my new sandals from Ardène. I felt there were too many straps across the toes so I simply cut a few off and voila! Much more flattering.
My sister got married on Saturday and it was such a crazy, busy but extremely fun weekend. This post is wedding heavy but there is just too much to not share. You can find more photos on my Instagram.
Cheers!
The bridesmaids, my mom and I, spent Friday morning preparing these
tasty red velvet cupcakes-in-a-jar favours for the wedding.
We ran out of cupcakes so my sister was baking more that morning!
Sweet champagne flutes the bride designed for her bridesmaids.
We took these to our hair appointment the morning of the wedding to have mimosas.
Caroline, at Noir Salon, did my hair and killed it.
I was so pleased with how it turned out, even better than my inspiration photo!
The finished product. Ah-mazing (I even slept on it and wore it to brunch the next day).
From the salon, we went back to my sister's place to get dressed.
I did my own make up (the bride requested a smokey purple eye),
the bride got dressed and we headed to the ceremony.
Outfit deets: Alfred Sung dress, Paris Hilton heels (similar), Silk flower bouquets from Morgann Hill Designs.
Married!
During photos, the Best Man and I came up with a plan to switch shoes to enter the reception.
The photographer caught the moment (haha!).
We hit up a skate park after the formal photos and the newlyweds
switched their shoes for some more fun shots.
We rode around in style, thanks to the bride & groom's excellent taste (and budget!).
In the limo celebrating with champagne.
First dance.
The favours turned out so well (missing: the thin black ribbon & black spoon tied to the jar) and were a huge hit.
Bride & Maid of Honour
Having fun in the photobooth.
Three words: midnight. poutine. buffet.
Stealing a moment during the busy reception...
Congratulations Lisa & Adam!
Outfit deets:
* Spense dress (from Ricki's and no longer available).
* Bamboo wedges (old) that are like real sized Barbie shoes and I've worn with a pink skirt in a pretty (tulip) garden post a couple years ago.
* Ardène hat (above) & Giant Tiger stripe hat (below, similar).
* Accessories: J.Crew Bubble necklace & Joe Fresh bangle.
We held my sister's bridal shower at the end of July on one of the hottest days of the summer. A party that was planned for outdoors was quickly moved inside prior to the bride's arrival as we were sweating just setting up some chairs and a tent.
The theme was garden tea party meets Kentucky derby and we asked all the women to wear, 'Elaborate hats,' which was a total hit. I picked up my sister's white sun hat from Ardène and it was eventually decorated with ribbons and bows from all the gifts she opened.
The food consistent of an amazing watermelon tea pot filled with melon balls, finger sandwiches, chic veggies & dip, cheese, crackers, meat and spinach dip. The lemon cupcakes with blueberry icing were a big hit and served on a cake stand I made specifically for the event. To drink, we served a mix of rosé wine, mimosa's, flavoured waters and non-alcoholic punch.
We played many games, including one where I asked the bride trivia questions about her husband-to-be (I already had the answers from him) and when she got the answer wrong, she had to eat three gumballs. She had quite the wad by the time the game was over! I'd love to share some pictures of our afternoon:
