We decided to try out Salt yesterday for brunch, after the gym with a friend and I hadn't planned on sharing this eating out experience, but figured why not.
First off, the restaurant is gorgeous inside and if you're from Ottawa, you know this was formerly a Broadways and very casual. It's now transformed into a velvet-and-crystal-chanelier chic lounge with beautiful, moody decor, plush arm chairs, a grand piano in the front bar, an open kitchen and completely overhauled bathrooms.
We decided to sit on the patio, since I was still in my gym clothes and din't realize how posh and beautiful this place was. The patio boasts beautiful lounging couches with fire places in the centre and dozens of high-top rounds, great for enjoying your meal al fresco.
I had the original breakfast, two eggs, honey bacon, roasted small potatoes and home-made bread (note: they don't make whole wheat, unfortunately, but the bread was amazing and fresh). Eric enjoyed the same as me and Marco ordered the Chicken & Waffles which came with a side salad.
The food was great, the coffee is super strong--which is not my favourite, but I know others enjoy that--however, unfortunately we had a bad service experience. I don't want to write this place off completely, as it seems like it is really great except for the server we happened to get yesterday. The rest of the staff were professional, helpful and attentive to our needs.
If we were to return, I'd certainly like to try out dinner on a Thursday through Saturday as those nights they have someone playing at the grand piano all night, which would be such a great ambiance. Additionally, if you're looking for something that's not quite downtown, but fancy and where you can dress up, in the heart of Little Italy, this could be it.
