So I finally put together an outfit so I can wear my new boots and what happens? Fire alarm at work. Ya. I didn't even get to strap these puppies on since I wear a commute boot into work and change shoes when I get there (Canadian winters are harsh on shoes). I got to work, fire alarm in full effect, so we are moved to another building... where we wait... for over an hour... to finally be told we can go home for the day. Woohoo!! A real 'snow day' (it was snowing like crazy) which never happens but bummer because these shoes never saw the light of day. Oh well, next time.

What are your plans for the weekend? I plan to relax tonight, catch a movie tomorrow night and spend a whole lot of time relaxing. Oh, and pancakes are on the menu for a Saturday morning breakfast (mmm, it's been a while).

Mini Refillable Perfume Tube

You know when you're out and about or especially going on a trip and you wish you had your perfume with you (but didn't want to lug the big bottle along for the trip)? Well now you can!

This little tool (called the Travelo) is around $12 bucks and gives you 65 sprays of your favourite perfume, and it's tiny. You just take the cap off your perfume, attach the Travalo and pump until it fills.

The best part? It's the size of a lip gloss and your big bottle of perfume remains safe (at home). What a great idea!

I used to plan outfits around my shoes, but in the past year that has changed. Now I tend to pick the shoes last (unless I have a new pair that I want to rock purposely) and sometimes I an indecisive; case in point, the outfit above.

I couldn't decide on the girly ruffle pumps or the edgier wedge booties. I ended up going with my plain black pumps (the ol' tried 'n' true) as I wanted something feminine and while I love those Lilliana pumps above, they don't stay on my feet very well when I'm walking around (which I do a fair amount of at work).

I went to Dollarama last night for one thing: a paint brush.

I left with five things: a paint brush and these four wicked rings.

Yes, these rings are from the Dollarama and they were $2 bucks each. What! Run, don't walk, to your nearest and dearest Dollarama to score some (they had other colours too!).

My weekend was really good, it was filled with food (tons of it), a movie (Moneyball), sleeping in times two, late nights, more food, organizing, and spending time with favourite people. Oh, and I got some laundry done; four of seven loads, which means there is still more.

Saturday MOH Duties

There's a ghost in my office...

Today I'm heading to my sister's place. She is getting married in September and I am the Maid of Honour (MOH).

Today we will be working on the centre pieces. Not sure if I'm allowed to divulge any information on here but they are a definite DIY and very time consuming.

The other bridesmaids will be there and the bride-to-be has promised us copious amounts of wine and snacks to get through the night.

Do you ever lose things?

I have never lost things before but lately my good habit seems to be changing. Blame it on moving a few too many times, or just being simply unorganized but it's happening. And it's frustrating.

Namely, one of my favourite necklaces has been misplaced. It could be in a few places, but if I knew which places, it wouldn't be missing! It's frustrating because I was always so diligent with keeping track of things and now I can't seem to help it!

I'm obsessed and coveting (so badly) a pair of Isabel Marant's Willow high tops. They came out in October 2011 and are difficult to get your hands on now (eBay has a few pairs left as does La Garconne in the amazing ivory colour) but would you believe the colour and size I want is available on eBay?! I'm dying. I wish I could buy these so badly!

It's a Meatloaf Kinda Night...

It seems lately (or at least when I'm uninspired) my favourite question to my friends is, 'What are you having for dinner?' aka what am I having for dinner.

See how clever that is?

Anywho. A friend suggested meatloaf tonight and sent me the recipe.

I like easy, healthy stuff, and this fit the bill.

I made it and devoured it at 10pm... because I got home late, then had to make it, then it took an hour to cook... then I ate it. And I have a (hot) lunch for tomorrow. Woo.

Meatloaf:

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees F

* 1 chopped onion

* 4 minced garlic cloves

* 1 pack of lean ground beef

* 1 cup of bread crumbs

* 1/2 cup of milk

* 1/2 cup of tomato sauce

* 1 egg

* 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce

Mix everything together with your hands. Line a loaf pan with tinfoil and 'fill' with your meatloaf mixture. Bake for an hour. Let cool 15 minutes before cutting.

I topped mine with a ketchup based sauce (1/3 cup ketchup, 1/2 tsp nutmeg, 1 tsp dried mustard).

The Non-Purchase

Do you ever go shopping and find something you like but when you put it on it doesn't exactly like you? You stand in the fitting room, himming-&-hawing over said item, in hopes it will magically start looking better, be more flattering, and simply scream, 'Take me home!'. But alas such cries do not come, and you feel sort of, 'I like it but I wish...' (the sleeves were shorter, the stripes were a different colour, the cut wasn't so... etc.).

I like to live by the, 'If you don't love it, leave it' rule, yet I still get stuck sometimes. Sometimes I just want to like something so bad, but the chemistry (like any good relationship) just isn't there.

Such is so with the top above. A boxy striped Cynthia Rowley top (from Winners, $19.99) that I wanted to like so badly, but when I put it on, it was a big, 'I'm not sure' (aka, I didn't love it). I tried it on frontwards (left) and backwards (right) in an attempt to convince myself it was super versatile and it was like having two shirts in one. This still did not make me love it, and in the end, I left it. Looking at the photos now, I kind of wished I'd bought it, but at the same time, I knew I'd feel that way and it probably would have sat in my closet for a while.

I'm not sure if I'll be able to take a tropical vacation this winter (I sure hope so though because it was -34 yesterday!), but if I do, you can bet I'll be packing this dress, my new wedges and these summery earrings.

Neutrals and pops of turquoise (my favourite colour) are my fave. I only got the chance to wear this dress once last summer (for Canada day, with red shoes) because she sadly got into a bit of a fight with the washing machine. Turns out, if you don't want to be hand-stitching crocheted parts of a dress back together, you best get to hand washing.

On Friday night I had dinner with some friends (tacos!) and Saturday was a family day (after sleeping in till 1pm). Sunday I ran errands and made meatballs for dinner and did not touch the laundry I should have done (oops).

Quipid 'Miley' | Diva Lounge 'Jacoba'

New shoes are always fun to receive in the mail! These just came in and I cannot wait to rock 'em. Of course the espadrilles will have to wait till summer (or do they?) but I couldn't pass them up as I knew they'd sell out quick (plus my size, 10, always sells out pretty quick. Update: they only have them in black now).

I'm still debating what I will pair the boots with. To be honest, they are kind of outside of my fashion box but I always try to push myself and expand my limits when it comes to my style. I consulted a friend and she made a couple suggestions (shorts+tights+blazer or coloured skinny jeans+neutral top) but I was looking for a way to dress the boots up, especially for work. She suggested a flowy style dress with sleeves. Perfect! Love that idea (do you have suggestions?) and hopefully I'll be able to show you guys soon.

I took a quick trip to Toronto this past weekend for a family member's surprise 50th birthday party. I drove there with my family on Saturday and came home Sunday (about a four hour drive). A great bonus was since we were heading south, when we left for Toronto, it was about -11C and we had about a foot of snow. The closer we got to TO, the warmer it got and the more snow disappeared. By the time we arrived, it was above zero degrees and there wasn't a trace of snow (love that).

The party was held at a small pub and tons of people showed up. The birthday boy was uber surprised and I got to catch up with family I haven't seen in quite some time. While I'm not a huge fan of road trips (at all), it was so nice we were able to be there for the birthday and you could tell they were so happy we made the trip.

Christmas Holidays: iPhone Snaps

The Christmas holidays for me this year included lots of family, sleeping in every day, far too much food and plenty of good times. I'd love to share with you some highlights of my 10 days off...

I kicked off my holidays right by staying in and ordering Indian take-out. The butter chicken wasn't the best, but that fact that I didn't have to venture out was a big plus.

The following morning, Christmas Eve, my sister and I hosted a birthday brunch for our Dad at her place. We made breakfast burritos (the birthday boy's request) and roasted potatoes and served vanilla and chocolate cake for dessert.

My sister and her fiance recently got a new puppy and named her Piper. Needless to say, I'm an obsessed Auntie.

That night, my sister and I headed over to our parent's place (tradition) where my mom had a massive spread of treats and goodies (I brought those ginger cookies I love). We pigged out and had a great time before all heading off to bed around midnight.

On Christmas morning, we awoke to a continuous snowfall (so pretty). We raced into the living room to see what Santa brought us (and Santa didn't disappoint!).

After we open our stockings, we always have breakfast before moving onto the presents. My mom made the (Pillsbury) cinnamon buns and croissants that my sister brought and I made everyone Mimosas.

We spent the rest of day lazing around, playing with our new gifts (yes, that is my new Michael Kors watch - a gift from my parents! Eep! So excited!) and of course prepping dinner.

For Christmas dinner we had turkey, stuffing, mashed carrots/turnip, sweedish potatoes, corn, peas, tomato aspec & broccoli salad. It's my favourite meal. Ever. Much later in the night, after my grandparents had left, my Dad broke out his mad bartending skills and made us all ceasers.

In the days that followed Christmas, the weather got worse and we were dumped with a lot more snow (but it was quite pretty).

I met up a with an out of town friend at a new-ish Italian place and we both enjoyed the manicotti. Afterwards, I did a little shopping and picked up the off-white top from Old Navy (among other things). A couple days later I attempted to make bite-sized baked brie (but they didn't exactly turn out great).

For NYE I headed up to cottage country where there was lots of relaxing (by the fire reading my newested borrowed book), card and board games were played, curried shrimp poutine was eaten, and the scenery was beautiful.

Overall it was a great Christmas and so nice to have an extended vacation. Hope your Christmas was as wonderful!

What Diet?

I'm on a diet. Ha. Haha. Hahaha. That is laughable because I don't do diets (you think I have that kind of will power?). So, I guess I'm not really on a diet, but as I sit here and type this, my stomach is growling despite just eating (cottage cheese with berries). I am certainly watching my intake since completely over indulging throughout the holidays, and am trying to get back to eating clean. However, I'm starving. How starving? I just ate two Vitamin C pills to drown out of cries of my angry stomach.

Okay, so I'm not that hungry, I have eaten today, and eaten well. An egg white omelet for breakfast (with cheese and broccoli), an apple for a snack, turkey soup, (10) almonds and the cottage cheese. Tonight I have plans for grilled chicken (going to use my panini press instead of my oven) and a large side salad with cherry tomatos and low-fat feta. Are you bored yet?

I wouldn't say this is a New Years Resolution (that's far too cliché), just a kick start to get back into my regular routine. You see, over the past few months I have been indulging maybe slightly too much. Not to the point that's it necessarily noticeable to others (is it!?) but it is to me. And I don't like it. One bit. Something must be done. Also, I'm not really digging the way it's making me feel, and when that happens, it's time to kick your own butt, hence, precisely what I'm doing.

While perusing YouTube the other day, I came across a BodyRock.tv workout they had posted, which prompted me to their site (I had a friend who used to do their workouts and she raved about them). Sure enough, tight lean bodies, friendly (and likeable) attitudes, and simple (but killer) workouts you can do in your own living room (or at the gym, if you have a membership like I do). Awesome. I'm taking one of the workouts (it's seven minutes; pu-leeze, you can do anything for seven minutes) to the gym tonight and going to give it a try after I hit the cardio. Also, I was able to download the Gymboss interval timer app on my iPhone versus forking out the cash to purchase one, which means no waiting to try these workouts 'properly' and no excuses.

I find I often need some sort of variation, kick-start or newness for my workouts. Zumba seems to be the only thing I've stuck with consistently (almost three years) but everything else gets pretty boring. I recently tried Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred. Phew! What a doozy. Seriously killer. There are three workouts (level 1, 2, and 3) and you do each for ten days before moving onto the next. I certainly couldn't discipline myself to workout for 30 days in a row, but when I was lacking motivation to hit the gym, it was nice to go home and have an alternative in my living room. That said, it didn't last long before I was unmotivated to workout from home, so back to the gym I went.

And now? Well now I just found out that my favourite Zumba instructor might not be teaching anymore (the only time I can actually guarantee I will get my ass to the gym) and I want to cry (dra-ma-tic). She was there when I started doing Zumba as a participant. She started out by helping another instructor, she would teach one song a few times, and slowly she would teach half the class until she took over and it became her class. She's amazing, and I don't want her to leave. Wah wah.

2011 has proven to be the most difficult year of my life, and while things didn't come up all roses, I do count my blessings at what I have overcome and how much I have grown. It also makes me grateful for each day, and each day that gets a little better and I get a little stronger. As one of my favourite quotes goes, 'Where there is no struggle, there is no strength'.

I am looking forward to continuing to put one foot in front of the other for this new year, growing and always striving to be the best version of myself.

As mentioned, I played an Elf on Christmas Eve Eve (last day of work). Employees are encouraged to bring their kids to work on that day and seriously, when the kids saw Santa, they went nuts. Totally adorable.

Thrifty Wednesday

I stopped by Value Village a couple weeks ago and had tremendous luck, this jacket being one of (three jackets) I picked up.

It's from H&M and a size 6.

It had a couple stains on it, but I noticed the tag said it was machine washable so figured it could be worth a shot. When I got to the cash, I mentioned the stains to the cashier and she gave me 30% bringing the price to a whopping $10! When I got home, I washed it (without any stain fighter) in the machine and it came out as good as new.

New jacket love all up in this piece.

Christmas Outfit

I hope you all had an excellent Christmas, I sure did! My sister and I compromised and decided on a 9am start time for Christmas morning. I got up, showered, and proceeded to put on my comfy clothes (why did I shower? I packed an outfit to wear for unwrapping presents and ultimately decided I wanted to wear sweatpants and a hoodie. Still works).

I headed downstairs where my parents and sister were waiting to me. We went into the living room to see what Santa brought us and he was good to me, that's for sure! We then took a break, at cinnamon buns and croissants and drank coffee (which later turned into mimosas). Then we got busy unwrapping our gifts and I have to say I have been spoiled and am very, very blessed (I'm going to do a post on the gifts I was fortunate to receive).

We lazed around that afternoon, reading our magazines, trying on new clothes, playing with new gadgets, etc.

After hours in sweatpants I changed into the above outfit (and did my hair) for Christmas dinner. My grandparents came over and we stuffed ourselves. More conversation and good times after dinner (which included more baked treats, thanks to my mom) late into the night. I then proceeded to do some pre-Boxing Day online shopping late into the night and finished watching, 'What's Your Number' online (cute movie, the book is better, obviously).

I have to say it seems kind of funny posting an outfit without shoes, however, I wasn't leaving the house and we aren't wear-your-shoes-in-the-house kind of people (yuck. I'm a bit of a germaphobe so the idea of wearing shoes in the house grosses me out. Think of where you and your shoes have been... gym locker room, in your car, restaurants... public restrooms... 'nuff said), hence the no shoes. If I was going out, I'd likely wear black pumps or ankle booties.

Artistic Effects (Powerpoint v10)

I have always used Microsoft Powerpoint to edit my photos so I was shocked to see the mad changes (and improvements) that have come along with the new version (10) I have been given. There is a super cool function under the (Picture Tools) Format tab. In there, they have something new called, 'Artistic Effects' where you can modify your photo 22 different ways.

I, of course, took advantage of this and played around with various photos. So fun! Maybe I'm behind on this (I've been using my old version forever, and we all know how pricey Microsoft Office is) but it's new to me and pretty exciting.

Mouse over the photos to see which effect I used on each one (they are all different and there are still so many more to choose from; my fave are the last two). It'd be kind of cool to use one of these effects to print your own thank-you or greeting cards.

Today is my favourite day of the year and are there traditions in my family, you ask? Oh are there traditions.

My sister and I always sleep over at my parent's place on Christmas Eve (also my Dad's birthday). We share a bed and she complains I always try to cuddle her and I complain that she won't let me. She wakes us all up uber early, like criminally early for a day off (we discuss this the evening before hand and the negotiating begins, 'We're getting up at 7am!' I retort with, 'How about 11am?' We eventually meet somewhere in the middle) and we all head into the living room to see what Santa brought us and open our stockings. Then we eat breakfast (croissants, cinnamon buns, fruit and mimosas) which we basically plow through in order to get back to the living room for the good stuff: presents! Then we spend the next few hours opening presents, listening to reggae Christmas music, taking pictures and laughing at my Dad's wrapping attempts (sorry Dad).

Later on, my grandparents will come for dinner and we'll have a huge (turkey) feast, which is my favourite meal of the year. We will all eat so much, lots of moaning and groaning will occur within five minutes of the meal ending, but ultimately, we will all be very happy.

I'm so excited; today is my last day of work for (get this) 10 days! I had to take three days worth of holidays and in return I get 10 days off. So. Pumped.

Today I'm playing Elf to Santa at work as employees are encouraged to bring their kids in. We always have a huge potluck and the kids get to see Santa. It's organized well, too; the parents buy a $2-$3 gift for their child, wrap it and write their name on it. Then they give it to our Admin who coordinates the whole thing. She ensures Santa gets the gifts so when the children sit on Santa's lap, they get a little gift. It's super sweet. I will be Santa's helper. A friend and co-worker will be taking photos so I'll try and get one of me and Santa to share with you all. Fun!

Christmas Stress

Okay, it's not terrible, as my shopping is all done, but the wrapping.

Oh the wrapping.

It's haunting me. Taunting me. And it's getting later and later with each minute. I have to do all my wrapping tonight. I slacked off last night (but did finish my shopping) on the wrapping as I promised I'd do it tonight.

And now, here I am, totally procrastinating.

On top of that I need to make a quiche for tomorrow's work potluck and some peppermint bark to give as gifts. I figured taking several minutes to post about this, instead of getting busy, would be the smart thing to do. Wish me luck.

Update:

I'm all done my wrapping. The quiche is made. There is no peppermint bark (oh well, it was the lowest priority). I'm exhausted. It's only taken four hours. Phew.

I packed up a ton of my jewelery away in a box my sister gave me for my birthday about six months ago. I finally opened it up as I was getting tired of wearing the same ol' shiz.

It was like Christmas came early as I rediscovered a bunch of accessories I almost forgot I had. It's like a refreshing breath of fresh air into my accessories wardrobe and almost felt as if I was going through someone else's stuff.

So a word to the wise, hide random things you love from yourself so when you come upon then months later, you don't have to go shopping, but still get that rush. Think of the money you'll save. Ha.

Just finished making and eating this. It was a total improv of a meal and it turned out quite good. I was looking for something healthy, filling and tasty after my sweat session at the gym tonight and this did the trick. Here's how it goes:

You need:

* Turkey breast (sliced into strips)

* Broccoli, red pepper & onion (or whatever veggies you like)

* Curry paste

* Plain Yoghurt

* Quinoa

Saute your onions in a little olive oil, while cooking your turkey in a separate pan. Add the other veggies to your onions. Once turkey is cooked, add that to the mix. Prepare the quinoa. Mix up two big spoonfuls of curry paste with three big spoonfuls (or more) of the yoghurt. Poor over turkey/veg mix. Simmer. Poor over quinoa & enjoy.

I'm rushing around today in preparation for tonight's girls Christmas party at a friend's house. We are having a potluck and a Chinese Gift Exchange and I'm suppose to be there around 6pm. So far I've done six loads of laundry and drank the shake above and still no idea what I'm bringing for food, nor what I'm wearing. Ack.

Since coming across the shake recipe last week, I've made it at least three times. This time I substituted Nutella (since I'm clearly obsessed) instead of honey, turning this into a peanut butter Nutella oatmeal milkshake (what a mouthful). Whaaat. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

Book Review: 'Seriously... I'm kidding' by Ellen DeGeneres

I read this book in 20 hours. That is a record. And no I am not some crazy speed reader. I started it at 9pm on Friday and while away in cottage country, finished it by 5pm Saturday. It`s hard to put down, and a super easy read. My friend lent it to me, and it was laugh out loud funny. Literally, I was laughing out loud multiple times (surrounding people thought I was crazy... or reading a really funny book. I'm not sure).

The book is full of ridiculous stories, thoughts and advice. It`s 241 pages and includes everything from short chapters (140 characters) to long winded useless ramblings that while may be useless, made me laugh, so I guess they aren't so useless.

Verdict: Buy this book (or borrow it and save yourself $27 bucks) and laugh. Relax. Transport yourself to another realm. Enjoy.

Monday is back again. The weekend was good though, so let's hold onto those memories. My weekend involved take-out times two, moving relatives, an attempted movie, an open house & time spent with my favourite people. Oh, and and I washed my bedding. Mmmm clean bed sheets, don't you just love that?

A high light of my weekend goes something like this: I thought, for a few weeks now, that I had lost my (only) pair of designer sunglasses I've ever owned. I've had them for less than a year, and wear them every. single. day. Love them. I'm not really one who owns much designer stuff either, so this is kind of a huge deal, you guys (after I discovered them missing, I bought the Dollarama sunglasses on my face you see above. See? Not owning a lot of designer stuff over here).

An-y-wayz.

I have been pretty upset since that fateful day I opened their beautiful case to find them not there. I was so diligent too, always using the case, always keeping track of them, how could I let this happen?! I searched high and low, but kept it on the DL because I'm ashamed. How could I lose something so small yet so expensive?

So Friday night I'm at my parent's place in their garage, and only by fluke was I on the phone and didn't go inside just yet, when I looked up to see my Gucci shades sitting on the a shelf! What!? All this time!? It was like the angels came down from the heavens and sang to me. Okay. Not quite, but I was pretty damn excited. And relieved. And I can tell you all this now because they have been found. When I went inside my parent's were all nonchalant like, 'Oh ya, we forgot to tell you they were left here a while back...' but then again, my mom has no idea what Gucci is.

I wanted to do a quick product review on a few (drugstore*) products I'm loving that I recently picked up.

NYC 'Smooth Skin' Loose Face Powder

Love. This. Powder. It's the second time I've bought it and I love it. I think this is just a loose powder, but I like to use it as a setting powder for my foundation or as a light bronzer. I haven't used many loose powders before so I can't compare, but I love that this doesn't have any sheen or sparkle to it, it's matte; goes on and stays that way. Another great part? It's $2.67.

Wet 'n' Wild 'ComfortZone (738)' Palette

I purchased this after seeing YouTuber LolaMarie using it multiple times (and it just looked so good). It was $3 so I figured I couldn't go wrong. And I was right. I'm super picky with eyeshadows; favourites being NYX and MAC (I also like Mark by Avon & CoverGirl). FYI I cannot stand Maybelline eye shadow (not enough pigment transfer).

After using this palette just once, I'm hooked and wish it came in more varieties (they are three different palettes to choose from). There are a total of eight eye shadows per palette and they have handy words written in the shadows (eg. brow bone, crease, etc.) in case you're like me and unsure where things are 'suppose' to go. The lasting power is great and only after a sweaty workout at the end of the day, was my shadow creased.

Fructis 'Hold & Flex: Body Boost' Hair Spray (level 5)

I'm a huge TrèsSemmé fan so when I ran out last time, I initially went to the store to pick up my regular can. However, it wasn't on sale and this kind was (half the price of TS), it smelt pretty good so I figured why not.

I have used it a few times and love it so far. It's a pretty heavy spray (compared to TS's 'fine mist') but doesn't goop and get really sticky or stiff. The scent is great (slightly floral) and it has great holding power. I will definitely buy this again.

Revlon 'PhotoReady' Foundation

I love this foundation. I initially purchased it about a year ago when PharmaPlus had a 50% off sale. Since I was new to using foundation, I wasn't ready to spend almost $20, but I was willing to spend half that. I ended up getting the 'Nude (004)' shade which turned out to be a little be on the light side for me (especially if I'm trying to add some colour to my face), but mixed in with a slightly darker shade of foundation (Maybelline 'Instant Age Rewind' in 'Sandy Beige (1)'), it worked out okay. I was excited to see another 50% off sale and snatched up the next shade up, 'Natural Beige (005)'.

Something about this foundation that I love is that it's creamy and not too thick. It covers well, but depending on the amount you use, it can go from a light to medium coverage foundation. I find it really lives up to it's 'Photo Ready' name as I feel like it smooths out my skin and makes it look much more even. I like to use this alone or mixed in with another foundation to give it lasting power.

* I mainly buy all my make up from the drugstore/Walmart. I just have a hard time spending a small fortune on make up (I'd rather buy shoes) especially when you can buy something like the Wet 'n' Wild palette above for $3 bucks and be so darn happy with it.

A Christmas (tree) Gesture

I have recently moved and really don't have enough space for a large Christmas tree, like in years past, however, was feeling pretty down about not having a tree. The thought of not really decorating for the holidays is sad, especially since I love to do it (but again, minimal space).

After having a bad day on Monday, and venting to my sister, she showed up at my office on Tuesday with a wrapped gift. I eagerly unwrapped my present to find this sweet (three-foot tall) white Christmas tree (with lights)!

She bought it for me along with some feather ornaments (I've been coveting a feather tree from Bouclair for two years now) to stick in my tree, since those feather trees are damn expensive. How sweet is that? And just like that, she made my year.

It's a Pulled Chx Salad Kinda Night...

I ate this tonight. Pulled Chicken Salad. A off-the-top-of-my-head recipe from an old friend that never fails. It's clean, healthy, filling and delicious (and quick, easy-peasy).

I was leaving Zumba tonight and hit up the grocery store as I needed two things: (i) groceries, and (ii) dinner. After picking up various produce and planning my meal for tomorrow night (I'm making a Greek chicken crock pot dish I've never attempted before) I started to feel hungry. I hit up the magazine/cookbook aisle for inspiration and I didn't even need to open a book! I saw a magazine entitled, 'Clean Eating' and my mind jumped to this salad and back to the produce aisle I went. Within 15 minutes of arriving home I was chowing down.

Ingredients:

* Whole BBQ chicken

* Spinach

* Veggies you like (I like: grape tomatoes, avocados)

* Canned mandarin oranges

* Optional: dried cranberries

Make it:

Pull all the chicken off your BBQ chicken and put in a bowl off to the side. Put heaping handful of spinach on plate. Chop veggies & add to the mix. Throw in whatever else you want (walnuts are awesome. As are hard boiled eggs). Toss some chicken on top. Enjoy.

Told ya it was easy.

Sometimes I make my own dressing (not tonight, thanks Kraft) and to do so I squeeze a lime (you could use lemon), chop a couple cloves of garlic, and pour in some olive oil. Shake it up and pour over your salad.

Last night I had one of my closest friend's over to celebrate her birthday. I told her that I would bake whatever she wanted for her birthday dessert and she chose a chocolate mousse cake. Something I've never made. Turns out, chocolate mousse cake can be pretty darn overwhelming, however, I did it! It feels like such an accomplishment because while I enjoy being experimental with cooking, baking is more my sister's hat and something altogether different. I will be posting the pictures and the recipe in the next few days as it turned out really good (at least everyone said it was really good...).

Today is her official birthday and we are celebrating today by going for a morning break at the cafeteria at work. Happy Birthday J!

Healthy Smoothie

While leaving the gym a couple weeks ago, a trainer had set up a table by the front doors and was handing out dixie cups filled with a green 'energy' smoothie she made. I, of course, grabbed one because (a) I just finished a workout and was famished, and (b) I'm always up for trying something new.

Turns out although it looked nasty, it tasted delicious.

She had kindly printed out the recipe and had a stack of 'em for people to take home (with, of course, her personal training coordinates). A few days later I made my own but it didn't turn out green like hers, and I had to improvise a bit because who really keeps almond milk and two kinds of yoghurt in their fridge at the same time? Not this girl.

Healthy Smoothie:

* Frozen banana

* 1 Cup of Milk

* 1/2 Cup of Yoghurt

* 1 Cup of Frozen Berries (I used strawberries)

* Handful of Spinach*

Blend

Drink

Enjoy.

These photos were taken at 5:10pm. Welcome to November. It gets dark so early now, it's almost depressing. The only thing that is saving me is the still-visible grass. If you could advise the weather man to prepare the snow for Christmas Eve, that'd be great. Just great.

When I put on this skirt with the chocolate brown fishnets, it just felt too scandalous for work. The skirt is somewhat on the short side for me but I didn't want to give up the look of texture on my legs. In a quick decision (as I was running late) I decided to try layering my tights and it worked. Chocolate brown opaque tights underneath the chocolate brown fishnets I had initially chosen.

Easy Breakfast Sandwich

The other (weekend) morning, in a semi-rush to get out the door, but a desire to not spend money on breakfast, I whipped up these breakfast sandwiches. Easy, healthy, and cheap. I used what was in the fridge, so feel free to improvise with what you've got.

Ingredients:

* Bread for toasting

* 3 eggs

* Ham

* Spinach

* Red onion

Heat a bit of olive oil in a skillet. Saute your chopped onion. Crack your eggs and poke the yokes. Add ham and spinach and let the bottom of your egg mixture cook.

When the top is fairly firm (not very runny), split your egg mixture into two or four (depending how good your flipping skills are) and flip.

Toast your bread.

Remove egg mixture (fully cooked now) from skillet, place on toast, add ketchup/mayo/whatever-your-lil'-heart-desires, and top with other piece of toast.

(Wrap in tin-foil if it's to-go &) enjoy.

I rushed to take these photos. Can you tell by the stunned look on my face? Ha. I was on my way to zumba, it was starting to rain, it was the end of the day, I was rushing, and the lighting was way off. I ended up with these two work-able photos, not my favourites... but I did like this outfit (and my MTL girlfriend asked me to share with her how I would style my new red pants).

Thursday, Thursday, the day before the wonderful Friday. Tonight I'm going to dinner with my grandparents and mom and then we are going to a musical (live play). I'm not really a huge theatre go-er, but it was sweet of them to invite me and I get to spend some time with some of my favourite people, so, I'm in.

In other news, I bought three new rolling racks from Canadian Tire (50% off till today!). I already purchased two from Home Outfitters which collapsed under the weight of my clothes (grrrr) so I returned those. These ones are more 'heavy duty' so hopefully they will work. If not, I will be lugging them back to the store... kind of how I was seen lugging them around the store. This girl, of course, did not take a cart and was trying to carry three massive (and heavy, might I add) boxes of rolling racks.

In a mini skirt no less.

Fortunately, a nice man in his fifties offered to help me carry them to the cash. And he had a limp. Like WTF, I should be helping him. How nice is that? He said it was his good deed for the day and to 'pass it on'.

I found lace shorts! So exciting, as I've been coveting a pair for several months now. I was shocked to see these on a display table at Urban Planet for $25 bucks. So ladies, run, don't walk, to your nearest Urban Plant (if you live in Canada) and pick yourself up a pair. I scooped up a size large and there are a little loose in the waist, but the medium was far too snug (and I could not zip 'em up).

I plan to style these babies with black tights, ankle boots and... and... and well I'm not quite sure what to put on top, but rest assured I won't leave the house topless. Suggestions?

Morning Hunger

I'm a huge breakfast person. As soon as I get up, I'm starving. As in: must. eat. now. As in: I have stomach hunger pains. As in: don't talk to me until you feed me. However, ever since changing up my daily breakfast routine (for weekdays, at least), I'm not experiencing the major growling stomach as soon as I open my eyes.

It's weird.

All my life I've always woken up starving and the only major thing I've switched up is my Monday to Friday breakfast. I have to link it to the cause. Weird, 'eh?

So, I'm conducting a little study and instead of making my morning easy omelet (at work), I'm going back to toast. As much as it was annoying to wake up with zero energy until I ate, I don't exactly feel 'healthy' putting off my breakfast for several hours (this also throws a wrench into my snacks, and I like to eat... multiple times a day, every few hours... like totally. all. the. time).

I made these pumpkin muffins last week and they have been a big hit. They came out kinda wonky looking because they are 'healthy'* and I guess that means they won't be perfect looking, but nonetheless, they're good. The flavour isn't bad, but a regular (fatty) muffin has a ton of sugar to make it sweet and flavourful. You will not get that with this muffin, however, in a rush or pinch, you can down one of these and the guilt doesn't tend to set in like with a normal muffin it would.

Kidding.

* What the heck is 'spelt flour'? No clue, so I used whole wheat (that might explain the deformation?). Also, I couldn't find coconut oil so I used olive (meh).

Whoopsies! I took these photos back in August (aka pre-grey hair) and never got around to posting them, and so, here we are.

So it's Friday! Woohoo! Okay, not exactly true, but tomorrow is a holiday which makes this weekend a long weekend and who doesn't love that?

So lately I've been noticing some changes. Body changes. Dun dun dunnnn. What's up with that? Is my age catching up with me? On top of that, to make matters worse, I'm suddenly addicted to chocolate. Okay wait. That's not true. It's not exactly 'suddenly', and the boat-load of on-sale Halloween candy I bought after Halloween doesn't help, but... well, okay, scratch that point. However, I'm having a tough time getting to the gym. Ugh. I'm still going like two or three (ambitious: four) times a week, but it's a struggle to drag my ass there. Unless it's for my Monday night zumba class, then you know I be gettin' my groove on. So, I guess that's just my body telling me it's time to switch up my routine and so I did just that Wednesday night by hitting a Body Combat class. It's an MMA (mixed martial arts) class (at GoodLife) and it's killer. I did it a couple years ago a few times with a girlfriend, but hadn't been since. What. A. Workout. By the end of the class I was drenched (got the visual?) and had a hard time lifting my arms up in the shower. Success! Hopefully I will be able to work this class into my weekly 'routine' once or (preferably if I can motivate myself) twice a week. However, now that the weekend is here, it's strictly sweets and no gym! Hoorah! ...er, wait, do you think that could my problem? ;)

A Step-by-Step Guide to Styling an Outfit

I am a later person. Ask me to be there at 5pm, I'll be there at 5:15pm, or worse, 5:30pm. It cannot be helped, I've tried to be punctual but never seem to succeed. Sometimes my family tells me the time to arrive is half an hour before everyone else... just so I'll be on time. Yes, they have resorted to tricks like that.

Sometimes my tardiness spills over into my work life. I say sometimes lightly. Fortunately, I have an amazing boss is who understanding and is cool with me being a few minutes late so long as I put in those few minutes at the end of the day (which I always do). However, in an effort to be on time, I decided to style eight outfits one evening last week to make mornings a bit more efficient. It helps, but I always tend to find something to do that results in me still being late. Le sigh.

Here are my top tips on how to style an outfit:

1. Start with the base. For me that's the bottoms (it used to be shoes, but I don't like to plan my outfits around my shoes anymore if I can help it). So pick a skirt, dress or pants.

2. Pick a top. A sweater, a button-down, a blouse, a tee, a tank... whatever!

3. Pick your second top. This is usually a layering piece like a cardigan, blazer or sweater.

4. Lay your 'outfit' on the bed. Now comes the fun part...

5. Accessorize! This includes belts, jewelery, hosiery and shoes.

6. Finally, the easiest step: bra & undies.

7. Next, take a hanger and hang all items on it. I like to fold my bottoms over the base of the hanger, hang the top over it, loop the hanger through my belt, along with my bra, undies and hosiery. Grab a ziplock bag and put your jewelery in that, seal, poke a hole and hang it on the hanger.

8. If you want to take it to the next level, pick out your jacket and cold weather accessories too, like gloves, a scarf/pashmina & a hat.

What's with me and grey lately?

As I sit here and type this I feel happy. My life is (somewhat) in order, my laundry is done, my belly is full, my place is (somewhat) tidy and I feel good. Things are falling into place and it feels good.

I had a Skype date with my BBFF the other night. Always good to catch up with that girl, and although thousands of miles apart, it's almost as if it isn't... almost.

And in other exciting news, I got a new laptop. Yay! My old one konked out on me after over six years and I have finally entered the twenty-first century. It's nice to have some speed and have something that doesn't take 12 minutes to shut down. It's also super pretty too.

Finally, can you believe Christmas is less than two months away? Love it! The stores are putting out their holiday products, seasonal music is streaming through the speakers, and there is no sign of any (icky) snow yet. It's like a dream. I've even already started my shopping, slowly but surely. When will you start?

Turkey Sweet Potato Chili

I used ground turkey (duh), for the first time ever, and it was good (but not quite the good stuff kids go for).

The weekend is finally here (and passing ever so quickly, of course). This week has been a tough one for getting out of bed in the mornings. I love sticking to the sheets; the earlier, the stickier. However, the weekend is finally here which means sleeping in and doing fun (non-work-related) things. I'm currently out of town brought my laptop with me and was able to get an Internet connection. The weather is crisp and cool and you can see your breath, perfect for a night in with fresh home-made Indian cuisine, Queen Elizabeth cake for dessert and some of my favourite people.

Easy Cinnamon Rolls

I've never made cinnamon buns from scratch before this recipe and let. me. tell. you: boy, was it easy. And delicious. And quick (maybe, maybe 25 minutes total). I tweaked it a little and used whole wheat flour (because I'm 'healthy' like that) and then covered them in cream cheese icing (because that's how I roll). Deeelish.

Peanut, our family dog came to visit on the weekend. She's such a cutie, but also very mischievous too. It was nice to have her visit for a long weekend of walks, cuddles and naps, but I was also thankful to give her back Sunday evening.

* Yes I let her sleep in bed with me (so spoiled, right?) but she doesn't shed and she smells good, so, those are my excuses.

Joy the Baker is my favourite food blog. Not only does she whip up amazing desserts, dinners, appetizers, cookies, cakes, breakfasts, soups and more, she's hi-larious. No seriously, she is. And witty, she's so witty she's makin' all the kids want to be just. like. her. I have made several of her concoctions before (my fave ginger cookies are courtesy of her) and this time I took on two recipes at once. At once! Quinoa Cakes (with some stuff in 'em) and a Vegan Broccoli Soup. And hot damn they were good. Seriously, this girl knows what she's talking... er... cookin' about. Don't take my word for it (or my photos, because not only is girl a phenom chef, she takes extraordinary photos too), check her out.

* I modified my recipes a tad just because I didn't have a few ingredients. Here's what I used in lieu:

Office with a... View?

After a year of being told and untold many times that I would be moving offices, it finally happened, and I got a window. Woohoo! The view isn't spectacular (a roof and connecting building), but in the winter, the snow squals in this little alcove are awesome and it's a window, hell-o. I'll take a window over no window any day and this is a refreshing change since I've been located in the basement* for over a year now.

* It's not really the basement of the building, more like ground level or a walk-out basement, if you will (aka you know the bugs you might come across in your basement? Well, you might have come across them in my office. Ack!). There were windows, just none near my office so natural light is a refreshing change.

Holding a Baby

I'm not really a baby person. Does that sound bad? It's true. I'm not one to ooh and ahh over a baby, coo at them or really take any interest in them. It always felt awkward, and weird, like I just didn't get it. I sometimes felt weird being a girl who wasn't into babies. I've never been one to yearn for a child or wish away my freedom (aka baby-free life) too soon for a baby, and while I would like that someday, not just yet, please.

However, that is slowly changing. Instead of feeling 'meh' about babies, I'm starting to really like babies. I even request to hold them when they are around and I like to make those silly noises and talk in that elevated voice. I'm even quite comfortable holding a baby, whereas before it was total awkwardness. And while I'm no where near to being close to wanting my own, I'm kind of digging babies lately. How do you feel holding a baby?

I've noticed a shift. A change of sorts. When I started blogging, I was all consumed with other fashion/person-style bloggers, couldn't get enough, fashion, fashion, fashion. Well, apparently I'm growing diverse in my ripe ol' age of 27 as I'm beginning to see a shift. I'm now more interested in content, not just fashion. I want to read what you have to say, even better if it's the nitty gritty of random weekends, how cooking something ended up a disaster (or an amazing dinner party), or simply how the previous evening went down. Sure, pictures to accompany these words are great, but I find myself coming back for more and more... words.

Heading to MTL on Saturday

My weekend in Montreal was top notch (I never say that in real life) and so much fun. I arrived at my girl friend's place around 10am, we chatted for a bit and then off we went to shop downtown. If you've ever been to St. Catherine's Street in Montreal, you know how awesome it is. If not, let me describe: blocks upon blocks of great shops, massive stores (Forever 21 is four floors. Four. Floors. {!}), tons of places to eat and just packed with people. Stylish people (and some not so stylish people, but I love seeing the stylish ones as they seem much farther and fewer in between in the city I live in).

I told her that I needed at least two hours in H&M and after parking her car, I asked if that could be our first stop as I knew it'd be where I'd drop the most dough. Was it where I dropped the most dough? Yes, yes it was. How much you ask? Too much to disclose (just kidding, Mom). Lastly, did I actually need the full two hours? I needed more. Two floors of H&M heaven, how could I not? After carrying around a truckload of clothes on one arm and digging through racks with the other, I thought my clothed arm was about to fall off when my girl friend came to the rescue and took the massive pile so I could finish the store. Next thing I know, she's worked out an arrangement in the fitting room (see photo below): my very own rolling rack of all the clothes I collected and need to try on (thanks sweet H&M sales girl). I added a few more to that rack before venturing into the fitting room. I emerged with several unique pieces and not a single basic (good girl). I felt proud that I didn't cave and buy three more white tank tops and two in black, yet instead I focused on silk blouses, skinny pants and some amazing jewel-toned dresses.

After H&M we hit Forever 21 and I spent the rest of my time (and money) there. It wasn't too busy but the fitting room lines were pretty long (as per usual). I picked up far less than I did at H&M but still some great buys. I'll share my purchases soon!

I have to mention this, while there (around 5pm) we experienced a Occupy Montreal. Right down the middle of St. Catherine's Street, hundreds of people swarmed the street and walked up chanting and shouting and holding signs. I wish I had of had my camera with me to snap a video as a picture wouldn't have done it justice (however this video was taken exactly where I was standing, right out front of F21). I guess the protest was regarding Wall Street and started in the Financial District of MTL. It was quite the sight to be seen: all these people yelling and walking amongst the cars in the middle of the street. Nobody in their car could move until the 'parade' was over, and just when you thought it was over, they turned around and came back down. They were people with megaphones, people with signs, people yelling, people chanting, people encouraging others to join them (ie. 'Dans la rue, avec nous!' translation: 'Come in the road with us'), and people videoing the crowds reactions. Pretty interesting.

We finally headed home around 6pm and ended up ordering chinese food and staying in and catching up (over some red wine, of course). It was perfect and productive as we cleaned out her closet and styled up some great outfits while at it (and she generously gifted me with a faux leather jacket she was done with... because I need another faux leather jacket, but in my defense I do not have one in this colour). We crashed late after the perfect evening in.

Sunday I headed home in the late morning and spent the rest of the day tidying up my place and relaxing. How were your weekends?

Weekend Trip to MTL

All packed, ready to go. I'm on my way to Montreal today to visit a girl friend and have a girls weekend. The plan was for me to go with two other friends, but it didn't pan out at the last second and so it's just me and my MTL friend. The plan is to shop till we drop, eat some delicious food, consume one too many glasses of wine at her place, and catch up. It's been forever since we've done it and will be my first time visiting her since she moved away a year and a half ago. Not only am I looking forward to seeing her but during our shopping trip we will be hitting H&M, and as you might remember, we don't have one of those in my city, and I'm so pumped. I told her I need at least two hours in there and I should get my fix. Have a great weekend!

The other day while at work, a same-floor coworker exclaimed to me, 'You look just like my friend Laura!' turning to her friend the, 'Doesn't she look just like Laura?' We'd never spoken before, and so I laughed and made a joke, 'Well I hope that's a.. good thing?' Of course it was, she exclaimed. She now calls me Laura every time she sees me.

About a year ago another same-floor coworker, a man this time, noticed a sparkly red (decorative) shoe I keep in my office atop a filing cabinet (you know I love shoes). He started calling me Dorothy (as in the Wizard of Oz) and it kinda just stuck. Over the months he'd call out to me in passing, 'Hey Dorothy!' until one day I was in the (very large) cafeteria at work in line at Tim Hortons. I spotted him a couple people ahead of me, and when he was leaving, he saw me and shouted out, 'See you later Dorothy!' When my turn came to order, I approach the cashier, ordered and then he said, 'Do you prefer Dora or Dorothy?' I laughed and finally said, 'Amanda'. He looked confused, with purpose, and I explained it was a long story.

Last summer while leaving work one day, one of the security guards asked me if my mother still works here? I must have looked puzzeled because the other security guard chimmed in that it wasn't me, but this girl Laura that works here (hey, waitaminute...). I guess people were getting her mixed up with me too because we sort of know each other and got to discussing it one day. Now we laugh and tend to amicably call each other, 'Twin' when we see one another (as in, 'Hey Twin, how are you?').

Regardless of how laughable the experiences are above, I'm never phased or insulted when someone says I look like someone they know, or makes up a cute nickname for me. Actually, in all honesty, I'm often intriguied by the unknown person they are talking about. Could I really have a 'twin' in the city? Have you ever been told you look like someone? What about a celebrity? Apparently she is mine.

Just call me Laura Dorothy Laura.
